Jefferson City, MO (The Lake Tribune) – As Missouri senators look ahead to next year’s session, public safety remains a key issue for discussion, with particular focus on House Bill 301. Despite time on the Senate floor this year, the bill did not progress further. Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden of Columbia noted that while there is unity on certain public safety aspects, the notion of a state takeover presents a more complex issue without a comprehensive agreement.

House Bill 301, which grew into a significant crime proposal towards the end of this year’s session, was seen by some, including Senate Minority Floor Leader John Rizzo of Independence, as focusing solely on the St. Louis prosecutor. Rizzo emphasized the importance of allowing the new chief of police to attempt to rectify issues while maintaining local control in St. Louis.

Legislators anticipate that crime-related legislation will be a topic of interest when they reconvene in Jefferson City for the regular legislative session starting on Wednesday, January 3rd.
